Biodiversity in glacier-fed rivers threatened by climate change

So many of these articles belong in several different places, the web of life is hard to categorize and put in one spot.

16 Mar 2012. “Glacial river biodiversity”. Nature Climate Change.

Glacial melt water increases biodiversity in mountainous freshwater ecosystems. As glaciers vanish from global warming, so will species dependent on icy runoff.

The study found that if glaciers were to vanished, we could lose between 11 and 38 percent of a region’s total macro-invertebrate species. The expected losses would be particularly high for species that have adapted to the unique and challenging living conditions of glacial streams. The destruction of these invertebrates would be much more extensive than once supposed and with unknown consequences for the functioning of the ecosystem.”
